Adding a decorative screen, wallpaper, or tactile wallcovering can add visual interest to your space without the variety of a gallery wall. “Embrace textured art—fabric, rope, weaves—as an alternative,” says Low.
As a rule of thumb (whose thumb I don’t know) never hang more than one gallery wall per room. More than one gallery wall may feel crowded & actually make the space seem smaller. Another good point is to not overdue the wall you are working with.
A good rule of thumb is to center your gallery at eye level, or at about 2/3 the way up the wall. This works great for blank walls with standard 8 foot ceilings, but you may have to adjust some if your ceilings are 12′, or if you have molding on the bottom half of your walls like I do.
Aim for 3–6 inches between each piece of wall art and around all sides of the frames. Arrange larger art with more space between frames, and group smaller artwork closer together. Also, leave plenty of space between the frames, trim, and molding, so the gallery has room to breathe.
While gallery walls may not be such a standout interior design trend anymore, the overriding opinion is that gallery walls do still have their place in home decor ideas, you may just want to re-think how you create them to ensure you avoid an outdated look.Jan 7, 2024
