You can practice self-care in many ways: exercise, eat well, meditate, seek therapy, and more. Each method of self-care fits into one of the seven pillars: mental, emotional, physical, environmental, spiritual, recreational, and social.
The term self-care was originally used in the medical field by doctors who wanted patients to be active participants in their own care by eating healthy, exercising, and maintaining healthy habits in general.
The Greek word for self care is “philautia” which translates most closely to ‘self love’ or ‘love of self.
Each method of self-care fits into one of the seven pillars: mental, emotional, physical, environmental, spiritual, recreational, and social. A well-balanced self-care routine involves each of these, so avoid restricting yourself to just one or two pillars.
According to the International Self-Care Foundation, there are seven main pillars of self-care that should be a part of every self-care routine. What are the Seven Pillars of Self-Care?
In this assessment you will think about how frequently, or how well, you are performing different self-care activities. The goal of this assessment is to help you learn about your self-care needs by spotting patterns and recognizing areas of your life that need more attention.
What would be your ideal self-care routine? What is the most helpful thing you are doing for yourself right now? What is one habit you wish could replace, and what would it be? Which area of your life do you feel the most stress?
Each method of self-care fits into one of the seven pillars: mental, emotional, physical, environmental, spiritual, recreational, and social. A well-balanced self-care routine involves each of these, so avoid restricting yourself to just one or two pillars.

The self-care assessment is scored by assigning numerical values to your ratings for each statement or question. In this template, the scale ranges from 1 to 5, with 1 indicating “Strongly Disagree” and 5 indicating “Strongly Agree.” To calculate your scores, add up the ratings for each section.
