A positive TB test indicates that you have been infected with the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. There are two main types of TB tests: the tuberculin skin test (TST) and the interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA).
For the TST, a small amount of tuberculin is injected under the skin on your forearm. You will need to return to have the test read by a healthcare provider within 48 to 72 hours. If there is a bump or raised area at the injection site that is a certain size, the test is considered positive.
With the IGRA test, blood is drawn and tested for the presence of proteins that the immune system produces in response to the TB bacteria. If the results show that these proteins are present, the test is considered positive.
If your TB test is positive, it does not necessarily mean you have active tuberculosis. It simply indicates that you have been infected with the bacteria and that further testing may be needed to determine if the infection is active. It is important to follow up with a healthcare provider for additional testing and possible treatment if your TB test is positive.
A person given the tuberculintuberculinTuberculin, also known as purified protein derivative, is a combination of proteins that are used in the diagnosis of tuberculosis. This use is referred to as the tuberculin skin test and is recommended only for those at high risk.https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › TuberculinTuberculin – Wikipedia skin test must return within 48 to 72 hours to have a trained health care worker look for a reaction on the arm. The result depends on the size of the raised, hard area or swelling.
Results. Redness alone at the skin test site usually means you haven’t been infected with TB bacteria. A firm red bump may mean you have been infected with TB bacteria at some time. The size of the firm bump (not the red area) is measured 2 to 3 days after the test to find out the result.
An induration of less than 5 millimeters (mm) is a negative result. If you have symptoms or know you’ve been exposed to someone with TB, a doctor may recommend you get another test. If the induration is at least 5 mm, it is considered positive in people who: have had recent contact with a person with TB.
Perform an IGRA (QuantiFERON® or T-SPOT®) as a second diagnostic confirmatory test. The person is considered infected only if both tests are positive. Do they have two or more of the following symptoms? Perform chest X-ray and medical evaluation to assess for active TB disease.
