A TB test, also known as a tuberculin skin test, involves injecting a small amount of fluid called tuberculin into the skin of the forearm. This test is used to determine if a person has previously been exposed to the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. After the injection, the area around the injection site is checked for any signs of a reaction.
In some cases, the reaction can look like a mosquito bite. This can be confusing for some individuals, as they may mistake the reaction for a common insect bite. However, there are some key differences between a TB test reaction and a mosquito bite. A TB test reaction typically appears as a raised, red bump at the injection site, which may be accompanied by swelling or redness. In contrast, a mosquito bite usually appears as a small, itchy bump with a central puncture mark.
It is important for individuals who have received a TB test to closely monitor the injection site for any signs of a reaction and to follow up with a healthcare provider if they have any concerns. Overall, while a TB test reaction can resemble a mosquito bite, it is crucial to differentiate between the two in order to receive appropriate medical care and follow-up treatment if necessary.
Some people experience some redness, rash, slight bruising or a small bump at the site. DO not WORRY! These reactions are common and do not necessarily mean you have a positive test. On a rare occasion, some people are very sensitive to the solution and develop a severe skin reaction.
What if my TB skin test is negative? The test is “negative” if there is no bump (or only a very small bump) at the spot where the fluid was injected. A negative TB skin test usually means that you don’t have TB. In some situations, you may need to have another TB skin test later.
If you have an Mtb infection, the skin around the injection site should start to swell and harden within 48 to 72 hours . This bump, or induration, may also change color. But the induration’s size, not the color, will determine your results. An induration of less than 5 millimeters (mm) is a negative result.
Redness around the injection site is not measured. This is because the presence of redness alone does not indicate that a person has TB infection.
